Loss

Addiction can bring losses across relationships, health, identity and stability, while recovery creates space to rebuild.

Loss in addiction and recovery can include a relationship, health, work, financial security or an expected future. Some losses can be partly addressed; others remain, and new possibilities do not erase them. Feeling grief or longing does not mean recovery has failed or that every loss must become a lesson. Practical needs and emotional support may both matter. If distress includes thoughts of harming yourself, seek prompt professional support; if you may act on those thoughts or cannot stay safe, seek emergency help now. Alcohol or drugs can add harm rather than resolve the loss.
