About Lived Journey
Lived Journey is an educational platform created to make addiction, alcohol use disorder, recovery and the neuroscience behind them easier to understand.
It brings together evidence-informed education, lived experience and practical learning resources in one place. The aim is not to simplify a complex subject into easy answers, but to make reliable information understandable, approachable and useful.

Why Lived Journey exists
Addiction and recovery can be difficult to understand, both for the person experiencing them and for the people around them.
Scientific information can be highly technical. Public information can be fragmented or contradictory. Lived experience is often discussed separately from the neuroscience and psychology that help explain what is happening.
Lived Journey was created to bring those perspectives together.
The platform grew from lived experience of alcohol use disorder from two different sides: the experience of AUD itself, and the experience of living alongside and supporting someone affected by it.
That experience does not replace research or professional expertise. It helps shape the questions we ask, the way information is explained and our understanding of why clear, respectful education matters.
Our approach
We believe people should be able to understand what is happening without first becoming specialists.
Our approach is simple:
Accessible first. Depth available.
We explain complex subjects in clear language while preserving the science and nuance behind them. Where greater depth is useful, readers can explore the neuroscience, psychology, behaviour and wider evidence in more detail.
We also recognise that addiction is not experienced as a collection of definitions or brain diagrams. It affects relationships, decisions, emotions, health, identity and everyday life.
That is why Lived Journey connects scientific understanding with lived experience rather than treating them as separate subjects.
What you will find here
Lived Journey is being developed as a connected educational platform rather than a collection of isolated articles.
It includes the Encyclopedia of Addiction, structured learning resources, downloadable materials, courses and other educational offerings.
Topics can be explored at different levels of depth, allowing someone looking for a straightforward explanation to begin simply while giving learners who want greater detail somewhere to continue.
Who Lived Journey is for
Lived Journey is intended for anyone who wants to understand addiction and recovery better.
That may include people experiencing addiction or recovery themselves, partners and family members, friends and support networks, students, educators, professionals, organisations and people encountering these subjects for the first time.
Different readers will arrive with different questions and different levels of knowledge. The platform is designed with that in mind.
Our principles
We aim to make Lived Journey:
Accessible
Information should be understandable and usable by as many people as possible.
Evidence-informed
Scientific and educational material should reflect reliable evidence, with appropriate care around uncertainty and developing knowledge.
Grounded in lived experience
Real experience helps us understand which questions matter and where conventional explanations can fail people.
Respectful
Addiction should be discussed without stigma, judgement or reducing people to a diagnosis or behaviour.
Honest about complexity
Recovery is rarely a simple or identical process. We do not present one person's experience as everyone's experience.
Safety-conscious
Some subjects involve withdrawal, overdose, medication, mental health or other situations where professional or emergency support may be important. Educational material should make those boundaries clear.
Open to improvement
Knowledge changes. The platform will continue to develop as evidence, technology and our understanding improve.
Education, not individual medical advice
Lived Journey provides educational information.
It is not a substitute for individual medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and it cannot determine what is safe or appropriate for a particular person.
Where a subject involves significant medical or safety risks, we aim to make that clear and encourage appropriate professional or emergency support.
