Intimacy

Intimacy is chosen closeness: feeling known, sharing something personal or welcoming physical contact while keeping the freedom to set limits.

Intimacy can exist in friendship, family life and romantic relationships, with or without sex. Substance use may become linked with feeling relaxed or able to open up, while secrecy, distress or unreliable behaviour can make closeness harder. Recovery may change what feels comfortable, but it creates no obligation to disclose personal experiences or restore a relationship. Touch and sexual activity require freely given, continuing agreement; someone unable to understand or choose because of intoxication cannot consent. Threats or coercion need attention to safety and appropriate support. Immediate danger or serious injury needs emergency help.
