Genetics & Vulnerability
Genetic differences can influence alcohol metabolism, reward, stress and impulse control without determining a person’s outcome.
If alcohol or other substance problems appear across a family, it can raise a difficult question: is the same future waiting for everyone else? Inherited differences can contribute to vulnerability, but a family pattern is not a forecast for an individual.
Addiction usually involves many genetic influences alongside experiences and circumstances. Heritability describes differences across a studied population. It does not tell someone what percentage of their own problem is genetic, or how likely they are to develop one.
Understanding inheritance can make a family pattern more comprehensible without labelling a person as defective. It also helps put genetic headlines and test results in perspective. Neither family history nor a genetic score can replace attention to what is happening in someone's life now.
