Gaming Addiction

Gaming disorder is persistent, hard-to-control gaming that takes priority over other activities and causes harm in daily life.

Gaming can offer enjoyment, challenge, creativity and friendships. Gaming disorder concerns a more specific pattern: control becomes impaired, gaming takes increasing priority and it continues despite serious negative consequences. The pattern significantly affects daily functioning.

Long sessions or disappointment at stopping do not, by themselves, establish a disorder. Sleep, school or work, relationships, spending and the ability to make choices all need consideration. A professional assessment can explore gaming alongside other difficulties rather than assuming it explains everything.

Support can work on the pattern, the needs gaming meets and ways to rebuild daily life. People do not have to wait for a formal diagnosis before asking for help with harm.
