Youth
Substance use can become part of a young person's life while relationships, learning and independence are changing. Clear information, respectful care and practical support help young people make choices and address problems without reducing them to a developing brain.
Young people have their own reasons, concerns and strengths around substance use. A problem may show up through health, relationships, study or feeling unable to control use. Someone can ask for help before a diagnosis or a crisis, and support should include their voice as well as their circumstances.
Serious harm can also occur on a first occasion. If someone is unconscious, breathing slowly or irregularly, having a seizure or suddenly confused, seek emergency medical help now. Do not assume they can safely sleep it off.
Recovery can continue alongside school, work, friendships and growing independence. Youth does not make addiction inevitable, and a young person's future cannot be read from their current difficulties.
