Impulsivity
Impulsivity describes several ways that action can get ahead of reflection or give immediate outcomes extra weight. Emotion, circumstances and substance use can influence it, but it is not a measure of intelligence, character or someone's inevitable future.
Someone may mean to make a different choice and still respond before they have considered it. That experience can be frustrating, especially when the consequences affect health, money or relationships. It deserves a more useful explanation than simply calling someone careless.
Impulsivity is not one thing. Difficulty stopping an action, choosing something available now over something later, and acting rashly during strong emotion can occur separately. A person may struggle in one situation and manage well in another.
Understanding the pattern can help identify what needs attention: the feeling, the timing, the options available or the support around the person. It does not provide a diagnosis or excuse harm.
Sudden confusion needs immediate medical help. Someone who may be physically dependent on alcohol should seek medical advice before abruptly stopping or sharply reducing drinking.
