Gait & Alcohol Effects

Alcohol can disrupt the brain, sensory systems and muscles that coordinate balance and walking.

Gait is the pattern of walking. Alcohol can make movement less coordinated during intoxication, while some people have walking or balance difficulties that continue afterwards. Persistent problems can involve brain coordination, sensation, muscle strength or several contributions together. A walking pattern cannot establish the cause.

A sudden new walking or balance difficulty needs urgent medical assessment. Sudden confusion needs immediate medical help. New difficulty walking or balancing after a head injury needs emergency help. Do not assume these changes are simply intoxication.

Someone who may be physically dependent on alcohol should seek medical advice before abruptly stopping or sharply reducing drinking.
