Gambling

Gambling involves risking something of value on an uncertain outcome. It can become difficult to control and cause harm to finances, health and relationships, including for people around the person gambling.

Gambling-related harm can begin before someone meets a diagnostic definition. Money needed for essentials may be lost, gambling may become difficult to control, or worry and secrecy may affect relationships. Trying to recover losses through further gambling can deepen the problem.

Support can address gambling, mental health, finances and the needs of affected family members. People do not need to lose everything before seeking help. Practical restrictions may assist, but their coverage varies and they do not replace care.

Gambling-related distress can be associated with suicide and self-harm. If you or someone else is in immediate danger or may act on thoughts of suicide, seek urgent emergency or crisis help. Do not wait for a financial solution or the next gambling outcome before getting support.
